From Drab to Fab: Old Door Mat Makeover

I’ve had an old door mat sitting in my garage for 2 years. I couldn’t throw it away. For one, it was an expensive mat. And, I couldn’t find another like it anywhere. The material was in good shape, but the color on it faded quickly.

I have a hard time throwing things away when they are generally in good shape, or fixable. I love upcycling and am all about reduce, reuse, recycle.

One day, I had the crazy idea to try painting it. I grabbed my favorite chalk paint and went to town.

At first, I used a paint brush, which proved too tedious. Next, I tried using a spouncer like these:

which was the answer to my tired hands’ prayers. I simply dabbed the paint on the raised areas and touched up the recessed areas with black paint.

And here’s the result of my effort…

Don’t mind me creepin’ behind the mat. 🤣

I’m super happy with how it turned out. The chalk paint is super durable on its own, but we sealed it with spar-urethane so it will hopefully last for years do come. Here’s my favorite chalk paint I use. You can get it in single quantities or bulk with multiple colors:

What do you think of how it turned out? Would you try this on an old mat of yours to reuse something you already have?
