Baseball Home Plate Door Hanger Tutorial

This is such a fun project for spring! Decorate your front door or hang this baseball Home Plate Door Hanger in your home.

I began this project with a piece of wood cut into the shape of a home plate.

I stained the wood first, dried it, then dry brushed white paint over the stain. I added some more stain back over the edges and top for a dirty look… like a home plate that was just slid into.

My favorite stain to work with is Folk Art Wood Tint. It’s nontoxic and barely smells at all! It’s even safe for kids to use or to use while pregnant.

I then applied my stencil to the board and painted my lettering with chalk paint. Make sure to apply thin layers of paint. My favorite brand of chalk paint is Folk Art Chalk Paint.

They have many different colors, and it’s affordable and works great. And hello, Amazon Prime! I have 4 kids, so holla! You can get 8oz, 16 oz or 32oz jars. They even offer discounted sets of many colors on Amazon like this one:

We use a specialized stencil material at our DIY studio but any vinyl scraps will do if you’re using a Cricut or Silhouette cutter. I like to peel my stencils when the paint is still wet so I get nice crisp lines.

Then, dry the board and peel out the inner stencil pieces.

You can leave the paint as is, or sand over the lettering when it’s dry for a distressed look. Voila!

Have fun!
